Everyone has either known, met or been a Meg Langslow. She is the person everyone counts on, expected to solve every problem, and bail out every catastrophy; and, once in a while, may be given some recognition. But the reward is usually just the fact that every request is a reminder that they are acknowledged as valuable and a leader of sorts. Been there, done that. Much the same can be said for Meg's family. It appears that Donna Andrews family may live within a few miles of me and I am tempeted to look them up to see how much has been drawn from them in creating Meg's family. If it is much, they may want to disown her. But like Meg, they are real and I'll bet the reader can think of some member of their extended family that will match one of them.

Like all of Donna's Meg Langdlow stories/mysteries/comedies "Cockatiels at Seven" is just plain fun. I like to stay one book behind knowing that any one of this series is a sure to be what Ray Bradbury called a "medicine for the melancholy" when I need it.

The bad guy seemed obvious from first meeting to me, but still enjoyed Meg in charge of a toddler as she contemplates motherhood. Crazy shenigans ensue. Did not see the side plot with Meg's new relative or how it complicated the investigation. Enjoyed Meg as mom and sleuth.
I love this series and have read all of them. This is the 7th book of the series. If you have not read any of them, you should start at the beginning if you can. Ms. Andrews has done a great job of developing the characters over the course of the series. If you aren't able to read the earlier ones, never fear, you can jump right in and never fell like you've missed anything. They are a wonderful escape and a very enjoyable read. I have recommended the series to several friends and I recommend it here as well! If you need an escape, it's cheaper than a vacation and can be read anywhere!
The Meg Langslow series is always fun. I love the characters and the fact that Meg is a curious, competent do-it-yourself type of heroine. I feel I am almost “coming home” every time I join her wacky family in another bizarre situation with the promise of a dead body (and usually a dead body that belongs to a thoroughly unlikeable character).
Meg is in blacksmith mode that Monday morning, wanting to build up inventory for an upcoming show. All that stops when her friend Karen stops by. Meg hasn't seen Karen for a couple years, so she is a bit surprised when Karen asks her to watch her toddler, Timmy, for a couple hours. As much as she wants to, Meg can't ignore Karen's obvious desperation, so she says yes.

When Karen hasn't reappeared by that evening, Meg is beyond panicked. And watching a Timmy hasn't helped her nerves. So Meg begins to hunt for the missing Karen. She's just begun when she finds the police searching Karen's apartment. Suddenly, it's looking like Karen might be on the run. Is she a criminal? Why did she leave Timmy with Meg? And can Meg find her and the truth?

This is another rollicking mystery. The emphasis is a little more on the mystery here, but I appreciated that. It started strong and held my interest until the end, which was a surprise to me. Members of Meg's family do appear, but they take a back seat in this book. Frankly, their usual antics were getting a little too predictable, so I appreciated the focus of the humor being on Timmy. I found him cute and funny and laughed quite a few times. Now that isn't to say that Meg's family doesn't get into the act. They provide a few laughs along the way as well.

I thought this entry was stronger than the last couple. I enjoyed every page. It should entertain Meg's many fans.
Every Donna Andrews book deserves 5 stars! Plots are good but it's the characters and the humor that make her stories such fun to read. Can't miss on any of her mysteries.
I generally do not review books since it is such a subjective activity. I tend to read things in order of how the series came out, this is one I could not do that way. After the fourth book it really became repetitive, annoying almost with the same nonsense over and over. Although reading one every now and then is a good read to take your mind off the daily stress in life, I would really space them out between reading other authors.
I love this series. I stumbled upon it and find them to be a fun distraction. There's never a dull moment. I enjoy the lighthearted nature and all the family complications. While these are fun and quick reads, the writing is very good and characters are well developed. After a few installments, you feel like you know them like your own dysfunctional family.
