The Unbreakable Curse A Beauty the Beast Retelling eBook Jenna Thatcher Reviews
as a huge fan of fairy tales in general and Beauty and the Beast specifically , I highly recommend this retelling . there is a refreshing amount of honesty between the characters that adds an extra level to the book. It's also well written , without errors in grammar or usage to detract from the story. I hope the author has more fairy tales to tell!
I wanted to like this book because the premise for the retelling was different and interesting.
However, the combination of flashbacks along with telling stories made it feel disjointed. I would just begin to get involved with the characters and then the story would switch gears. Thus I never felt tied to "Beauty", and only slightly to Luke (the Beast).
I did like the servants who were quirky and fond of their master.
Also, the wording in places was quite poetic. But then it would get overdone in other places.
Couldn't help wondering if this was a first book by this author. If so, she will be amazing once she has a couple more to her credit.
Retellings of classic stories are quite an undertaking to pursue. Those familiar with the original have certain expectations for the updated piece. Readers want new twists and turns, characters retold in a different light, but a story that maintains the essence of the original work. Jenna Thatcher does all of this and more in The Unbreakable Curse, a retelling of Beauty and the Beast.
The book follows Helen, the dame of the pair, and her experiences with Luke, a more cat-than-human prince. Rather than making Helen the confident, outspoken woman we’re used to seeing in a traditional ‘Beauty,’ she’s instead quite introverted and reserved. She still has a soft spot for libraries, but the couple has a new, contrasting dynamic we’ve never seen before in other B&B-esque tales. It’s an interesting story to follow, for even though we as the readers know the general plot, the interactions between characters are fresh.
Although there are moments when monologues drag a bit or back-stories are a tad rushed, the book as a whole is quite solid. Thatcher has a beautiful, smooth writing style that delivers the story like a river, her words ebbing and flowing as they’re read. It was an enjoyable, satisfying read that left me smiling to myself as the final page was turned. I look forward to reading Thatcher’s other published and upcoming work!
This story was absolutely breathtaking. I don't normally write reviews, but I felt this book needed one. I probably won't do it justice, unfortunately.
From the first page, I was intrigued, and as the story progressed and the characters took on life and depth, the tale unraveled with pure creativity. Helen's tales, while familiar to anyone who's ever read a fairy tale, were craftily executed. The blossoming friendship and trust between her and Luke was eloquently done. It didn't happen overnight or even over a week, but throughout the entire journey. I sincerely hope this wonderful author keeps producing such fantastic stories. She's got a new fan right here.
Loved it! I loved how she combined a few fairytales in the book! Very imaginative!
I don't usually give 5 star reviews, and yet this one deserves it. Helen is a fitting heroine and Luke's very nature makes me feel like they are the perfect couple.
Loved the twist of characters on this retelling of one of my favorite stories. I thought it was nice to have the change up in Helen's history so that other stories could be told threw her experiences of hardship but that she still kept a loving spirit. Just in general thought it was a great read and didn't want to put it down. Hope to read more of Jenna's stories.
